About the site

The Living Room is a site for young people to develop their confidence and ability to give their opinions through chat with other young people and through talking directly to decision makers about issues that are important to them. It is also a tool to enable decision makers to find out young people’s opinions in order to help them make decisions about services and facilities in Manchester.

Who can use the site?
Young people living in Manchester between the ages of 14 - 19 years old. Anyone can view the site but in order to post, you must be registered. Decision makers can only chat to young people through organised live web chats and must contact MYVP for an invitation.

How do I register?
To register, contact MYVP directly at myvp@myvp.org.uk or on 0161 234 2788 or talk to your teacher, support worker or youth worker about getting in contact with us. We will meet with you and get you registered as soon as possible.

What are the rules for using the site?
Young People have been involved in helping to develop the ground rules for the site. These rules are meant to help young people feel comfortable in using the site.

Is it safe?
All members using ‘The Living Room’ have either met or spoken with an MYVP worker or another worker in their community before their account has been activated. The site will block attempts to give out phone numbers or any other personal details and moderators will be double checking this to ensure the site is safe. However, if you are worried about any other person posting messages or have been asked for personal details or to meet someone else, please contact MYVP immediately through the ‘Contact Us’ section of this site or by email or phone. If your parent/guardian wants to know more about this site, please ask them to ring us at MYVP for further information.

Posting to the Site
‘The Living Room’ is ‘open’ from Monday to Friday between the hours of 6 and 9pm. This means that there are Volunteer Moderators online at this time helping to make sure young people stick to the ground rules and have fun. Outside of these times, you can still post to the site but it won’t be put up until a Moderator has checked it. This may be the next day or just before the next open session. Please be patient.

How do I get involved?
If you want to get more actively involved in The Living Room and want to become a Moderator, a Steering Group Member or help with promotion through stunts and workshops, contact an Outreach Worker at MYVP on myvp@myvp.org.uk or by phone on 0161 234 2788.

About MYVP

Manchester Youth Volunteering Project (MYVP) works with young people aged 14-25 who are interested in getting involved in their community through volunteering. Volunteering can offer young people the chance to meet new people, develop confidence, build up skills and gain valuable experience for work. It also feels good to do something for your community! If you want to get involved or hear more about what we can offer, please contact an Outreach Worker and they will tell you more about the kinds of things you could be doing.
